My Fitbit Charge 4 screen cracked last week, after only 4 months of wearing it. I was changing the oil in my daughter’s car and must have nicked the underbelly while draining the pan.
The thought did cross my mind to remove it before tackling this blue-collar task, but I thought, eh, it’ll be fine. After all, I’ve worn it all summer long while re-landscaping my yard. You know- shoveling dirt, moving cobble, fixing sprinkler pipe and laying sod… more blue-collar grit.
After reaching out to Fitbit’s customer service, they told me this type of issue is not covered by their limited warranty*. I pressed further for other options to get this fixed. Their response:
“As of this moment, Fitbit doesn’t have a repair center to help fix it. We’re constantly striving to improve Fitbit products and services, and we appreciate all of the input we receive from our customers. This will be taken as customer’s suggestion not just to help us improve our product but also our service.”
Ok, I’m fine that it’s not covered under warranty since I’m not looking for a free replacement. However, I am not fine that no repair option is available to me either! Fitbit’s Product Care page says:
“We design and build our products with the goal that you never want to take them off.”
While the latter part of that statement may be true — I don’t want to take it off — I also don’t believe this fitness tracker is tough enough to wear all day, every day… unless you live a strict white-collar lifestyle and don’t bump it on anything harder than your flabby abs.
If you’re considering this tracker to improve your fitness goals, understand that you are spending your money on what appears to be a disposable device. Mmmm, I don’t think I’ll be upgrading.
